All About Syrah/Shiraz
Que Syrah, Shiraz! Always wondered what the difference is? Here's your chance to taste for yourself. Truth is-it's the same grape! Its name just depends upon where it's grown. Down under, they call is Shiraz. Stateside, it's known as Syrah. Sip Syrah. Sample Shiraz. It's all good to us.
Lot 123 2006 Alexander Valley Syrah: Deeply colored red wine. Smoky and meaty on the nose with high-toned red fruit notes of cherry and raspberry and hints of pencil lead. On the palate the wine is medium-full bodied and well balanced and will serve as a great food wine. Pretty red-fruits meld beautifully with smoky oak on the finish.
Lot 131 2007 McLaren Vale Shiraz: Warmly fruited in that classic McLaren Vale/Barossa style (I am certain to be crucified for conjoining the two) with notes of spicy blackberry, leather, and meat. Maybe that sounds less than appetizing but that fruit/earth complexity is what makes syrah/shiraz such a fascinating and well-received grape.
Lot 135 2007 Central Coast Syrah: Inky black color with a red rim. Soaring nose of smoky spice and meat, plums, blueberries and violet highlights. The palate is broad and deep and redolent with spicy plums, blackberry fruit and pepper. Super smooth on the palate, this wine shows outstanding oak and tannin integration with framed fruit and a long, deep, broad finish.
