Chardonnay
In celebration of spring and back by popular demand, we bring you a brand new Chardonnay sampler featuring the hottest white wines of the season. If Cabernet Sauvignon is the king red
varietal, Chardonnay is the king of white. Arguably, the best white
wines in the world come from the Cote De Beaune in Burgundy
and are made exclusively from Chardonnay. It is planted in almost
every wine region throughout the world. It can produce wines with
crisp, refreshing acidity or full bodied monsters with great aging
potential. Chardonnay has the ability to display terroir in many
different ways. In a cooler climate it will have high acidity with
lemon, lime and citrus characteristics. In a warmer climate, the wine
will have riper fruit and more body. If Chardonnay is planted on
limestone or chalky soils, it will contribute to a chalky minerality in
the wine. If planted on clay soil, the Chardonnay will be fuller,
weightier with less minerality.
Chardonnay is truly the winemaker's varietal. The winemaker can have a
huge impact in the final product of Chardonnay. They decide how much,
if any, of the wine goes through a second fermentation called malolactic fermentation.
MF is the process from which astringent malic acid is converted to
softer lactic acid. The result is a wine with a buttery
characteristic. If the wine does not go through MF, it will retain
it's crisp, citrusy acidity (think lemon or lime). Deciding whether to
ferment and or age in oak and which kinds of oak also has a major
impact on the final product. If new oak is used, you will get a wine
with vanilla, carmel, and more nutty flavors. By using neutral
barrels, or older oak, it imparts slight body to the wine without
overpowering the fruit. A winemaker may also choose to use stainless
steel which will produce a wine with which keeps its natural fruit
flavors and its natural acidity is more apparent. There is no right or
wrong way to stylize a wine and winemakers may choose to use a mix of
these techniques for a single wine.
Sampler includes 3 bottles each of:
Lot 87 2007 Alexander Valley/Russian River Chardonnay: This is a beautiful bottle of wine with mixed floral and fruit aromas.
Imagine Bosch pear and Fuji apple served on a graham cracker drizzled
with caramel. Broad and deep on the mid-palate with lush tropical fruit
and vanilla notes lingering in a long finish.
Lot 92 2004 Margaret River Chardonnay: Gorgeously structured with perfectly integrated fruit and oak, utterly
seamless. This wine was aged in 50% new and 50% used French barrels. The nose soars out of the glass with elegantly rendered
vanilla, almond and lemon verbena notes. On the palate the wine is full
bodied but well supported showing spicy nutmeg, butterscotch and
almond.
Lot 97 2004 Western Australia Chardonnay: Though not typically found in Chardonnay, clearly some of the clusters had some
botrytis
and it shows adding additional sweetness and complexity to the
nose. Carmel crust, apricot and toasty oak round out the mid-palate.
None of this wine went through MF and it comes from a warmer climate.
The result is a well balanced wine with some body and natural acidity.
Lot 108 2007 Napa Valley Chardonnay: Nose of toasty oak, brioche, lemon custard and quince leaps from the
glass. The aromatics are well-defined and complex with a strong
backbone of minerality that tickles the nose and really lifts the
aromatics out of the glass. Just a baby, this wine does need some time
to breathe so a bit of swirling is in order. On the palate she’s broad
and lush with intense lemon, grapefruit and spicy oak. Highly
structured, this wine has probably the best aging potentials of any
chardonnay we have offered.
