Taste: The 2006 Hughes-Wellman is a classic Cabernet, full of power and grace, showing deep, dark, rich mid-palate blackberry and cassis fruit with exceptionally integrated tannins and great overall structure. It has a density and texture that highlight its Napa Valley pedigree. Light on its feet with fine tannins and an opaque purple color, along with a gorgeous perfume of cedar shavings, graphite, sour cherry, Italin plum, India ink, grilled meat and espresso roast. Cocoa and mocha envelope the pure fruit essence making for a seamlessly integrated mouthful. A lovely balance and fine depth, this wine is unbelievably long and complex. A beauty that should cellar for 1-2 years to maximize its elegance, but will be enjoyed for 15-20 years.
Cameron Confidential: A couple of years ago, my friend, and great winemaker, Sam Spencer came to me with a potential project. He was sourcing Syrah from a family-owned vineyard and had been given first dibs on the best blocks of Cabernet in the vineyard. Having a portfolio focused on Syrah and Tempranillo, Sam asked me if he could make the wine for our program and as tempted as I was, we simply were not in the financial position to do so (buying grapes and holding wine for three years just doesn't fit into our business model). Knowing my father was about to retire from his employer of 33 years, I asked him if he would be interested in launching his own wine. He approached his best friend and former fraternity brother, Sandy Wellman, about doing it together, and Hughes-Wellman Wine was born. And, of course, since that time, Sam has become our full-time winemaker.
That first vintage of Hughes-Wellman, the 2005, was an unbeliveable wine. We completely sold out of it-everybody loved it, consumers and critics. So for us, it's a huge treat to bring you the 2006 vintage. Only 400 cases of this wine was made and the only place it's available is at our online store. And no, it's not cheap juice at $50 a bottle. But it's also extremely small lot, hand crafted wine, and a stellar value in comparison to other Napa Cabs of the same caliber.
This is a very special wine to me, Sam, and the entire Hughes clan. Celebrating a friendship of more than 40 years and highlighting our ability to continue to bring exceptional wines to you at a value price. A little different and pricier than our Lot series, but worth it. Enjoy!
