Syrah/Shiraz
Syrah is a mighty, thick-skinned, workhorse varietal that produces wines with power and muscle that can age for generations from a good producer in a good vintage. It most often makes for a full-bodied, inky, teeth staining monster of a wine in its youth that develops into a medium-bodied, inky, teeth staining monster of a wine with age. Yet this varietal can be extremely versatile; with so many different wine making techniques and growing areas throughout the world, this grape can also produce soft wines with finesse or can often exude terroir of mint or black pepper on the nose or palate. This star from the Northern Rhone Valley in France has become a New World wine sensation! Syrah, or Shiraz as it's called Down Under has taken California and especially Australia by a storm. It is the premier variety in Australia creating still, fortified (Port style) and even sparkling wines. Still relatively new to California, it has made a name for itself and has come to rival Cabernet for some of the best, long lived red wines in the state.
Sampler includes 4 bottles each of:
Lot 63 2005 Lake County Syrah
Lot 67 2005 Russian River Syrah
Lot 77 2006 101 Year Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz
Clicking the links above will give you in-depth tasting notes. We recommend tasting these bottles side by side in this order:
1) Lot 63: Lot 63 was born and raised north of Napa in the up and coming AVA of Lake County. With its hot summers and low humidity, Syrah thrives in this area. This is the simplest, most fruit forward style of the sampler. You'll notice slight pepper and rose petals on the nose with ripe red and black fruits on the taste. Though this wine will age for a few more years, it is near maturity and drinking great right now.
2) Lot 67: This is one of the most unique lots we've offered lately. You'll notice tremendous fresh herbal and minty wintergreen aromas which burst out of the
glass. California is known for its big fruit-bomb style syrahs (Lot 63), but this concentrated, deep purple syrah is unique and is reflective of its rustic
terroir. Russian River Valley is a cooler growing region which is coated in fog throughout the year. Grapes are able to reach full maturity with an extended growing season which helps them keep their natural acidity.
3) Lot 77: Syrah made its way to Australia in the early 19th century. The Barossa Valley in South Australia produces some of the most premier Shiraz in all of Australia. Lot 77 tastes of dark chocolaty cocoa which is typical to the Shiraz of the region. Its 101 year old vines produce a seriously delicious Shiraz with complexity that tantalizes your senses. This is a big, young, concentrated wine which will benefit from a few more years of age. Make sure to give this guy some air before drinking.
